What is hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing is a way of preparing for birth that pairs learning how labour works with breathing and relaxation techniques you practise in pregnancy, so you and your birth partner feel calm and able to make informed decisions on the day.

What you learn

A hypnobirthing course covers two things side by side. The first is knowledge: the physiology of labour, and how your mind and body work together as your baby is born. The second is practice: breathing and deep relaxation techniques you use every day in pregnancy, until they’re second nature.

Who it’s for

Hypnobirthing is for you and your birth partner. Your partner learns alongside you, with practical ways to help during labour, so you both know what to do when the day comes.

Is it only for a natural birth?

No. The tools work however your baby arrives, including induction and planned or unplanned caesarean. Part of the course is about understanding your options and asking good questions, so you feel part of every decision.

What it isn’t

Hypnobirthing doesn’t promise a particular kind of birth. What it gives you is preparation: an understanding of what’s happening, techniques to help you stay calm, and the confidence to make the choices that are right for you and your baby.

Why I teach it

When I was pregnant with my son, Gabe, my husband and I took a private hypnobirthing course at home, and it was formative for both of us. I later trained as a hypnobirthing teacher so I could help other parents feel the same. You can read my birth story.

How to start

You can take the 1:1 private class, ten to twelve hours for you and your birth partner, or come to the weekly pregnancy relaxation classes in Richmond. [Shannon to confirm: anything you’d like to add, such as the research you’d like to point parents to.]
